of Chaparral Poets, Inc.

     April 18 – 20, 2002

Held at the beautiful Embassy Suites, 8425 Firestone Blvd, Downey, CA
with a variety of workshops, seminars, readings, entertainment and awards

CFCP will celebrate National Poetry Month by holding its annual Convention the weekend of April 18–20, 2002 at the Embassy Suites, 8425 Firestone Boulevard, in Downey, which is conveniently located between the Los Angeles, John Wayne, and Long Beach airports, with easy freeway access.

The weekend will be devoted to exploring the many strands of poetic expression that unite us even as they provide diversity. You won’t want to miss Thursday afternoon! Program chair Elaine Lazzeroni has planned a schedule that begins with check-in and set-up at 2 pm. Sessions from 3 to 5 will explore the theme through the poetic tradition of time and space. And from 7:30 to 9, we will have an opportunity to discover the Tapestries of Diversity our chapters are weaving. The evening will conclude, as usual, with informal read-arounds.

Friday will offer several options, including topics such as Poems about Parents, World War I poets, Humor and Light Verse, and Ballads and Song Lyrics, as well as the presentation of the Adult Contest Awards.

The Poets Luncheon will be held in the hotel’s beautiful atrium, and will feature an official Welcome by City of Downey officials, and a troubadour singer to continue with the theme.

The evening promises several special treats, beginning with a combination slide show and poetry presentation, Poetry as Therapy, and moving into a reading by a group called Paradigm Poets.

Saturday will open with our General Membership Meeting, followed by presentation of Children’s Poetry awards, and sessions of Performance Poetry, Introducing Poetry to Children, Making Gift Books, and Archives.

The Golden Pegasus Banquet will be held in a special section of Gregori’s, the hotel restaurant, with a guest speaker and presentation of the special awards, including the Pegasus and Roadrunner-up trophies.

Convention Chair Audrey Sosoka has a committee hard at work to make this event memorable for all who participate.
