FRIDAY:

Friday afternoon, our “Poetry of Place” Convention kicks off with a hearty welcome and organization overview by President Rick Costa of Sacramento. Next, San Jose’s Raven Sisco will engage participants in a workshop that has received rave reviews. She will jump-start our thinking with a micro-ode before leading us into ekphrasis.

After a dinner break, our Friday evening featured presenters are sure to entertain! Davis area performers Barbara West and Grace Loescher team up with “Speak, Poet!” to demonstrate effective theatrical and emotive poetry performance (more information at barbara-west.com).

Friday evening will conclude with a traditional Bardic Circle, an informal read-around of participants reading from their own work.

SATURDAY:

Saturday will open with our General Membership Meeting and an overview of our organization’s history and recent activities, led by President Rick Costa. The morning’s events will be rounded out with a presentation on Haiku 4 U by James Shuman of Modesto.

After a lunch break, the early afternoon features our Contest Awards, recognizing the authors of the outstanding poems in this year’s Student and Annual Contests. The winning poems in each category are read aloud, either by the author or a previously selected reader. The Contest Awards have traditionally been the highlight of the Convention. They conclude with the awarding of the Colt, Roadrunner-Up and Golden Pegasus trophies for outstanding work. Winners of these special awards are not revealed until they are announced at the ceremony.

Raven Sisco of San Jose will lead the presentation of Student Poetry Contest awards, and after a short intermission, Cleo Griffith of Modesto will lead the presentation of Annual Contest Awards.

Late Saturday afternoon presentations by Sacramento’s Sue Daly on “How to Make Your Poetry POP” and Modesto’s Cleo Griffith on "So You Want to Get Published--Now What?" offer practical self-improvement.

Our Saturday evening featured speaker is Jackie Joice, Long Beach area poet, author, and photographer with a rich family history among the African-American migrant farmers of central California
